Faith is an important component of our family. There have been many times over Morgan and Kami’s first years that I have prayed for them, and have shared with them that I am praying for them. This Fall Morgan begins Kindergarten. It is going to be a year full of first adventures. Her first year at public school. Her first year of being in a classroom all day. She will be meeting so many new people, navigating new routines, and facing new expectations.  I’m sure I won’t be the only grandparent saying a back to school prayer for our grandkids.

I have been thinking about this for a while, and want to invite you to join me in praying for our grandkids during their first week of school, and beyond!

The following back to school prayer is what I’ve written for the first five days of school. I am sending a copy of them to my daughter Amanda and granddaughter Morgan too.

These simple prayers have words appropriate for young children and teens alike. I’ll be praying them day after day, and year after year!

I have written these prayers in my granddaughter’s name and would encourage you to download a printable version of this prayer in the printables library. You can print and write in your grandchild’s name to personalize them! Free to subscribers – simply join below.

Day One – Safety

Dear God,

I ask that you will keep Morgan safe as she travels to and from school, as she walks in the hallways, and learns in her classroom. Please watch over her as she participates in her after-school activities. I ask that you help teachers and administrators be vigilant and that you cover her whole school with your protection. Amen.

Day Two – Health

Dear God,

I ask that you keep Morgan healthy! Help her remember to do all of the essential things that will help keep her healthy. Help her make good decisions about what is safe to do. I thank you so much that she has healthy food to choose from and a safe place to sleep and get rested. And when those little germs begin to mess with her, I ask that you help her body fight them off quickly and completely. Amen.

Day Three – Wisdom

Dear God,

I ask that you give Morgan a desire for knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.  Help her have listening ears for her teachers. Encourage her to not be afraid to ask questions that will help her understand the concepts and skills she is being taught. Help Morgan’s heart be soft and able to accept correction. Please help her teachers see the gifts and talents you have given her, and encourage her to develop them. I ask that you give Morgan insight beyond her years and that you will help her have an incredible judgment in each and every situation.  Amen.

Day Four – Friends

Dear God,

I ask that you give Morgan the best of friends as she begins school.  Help her be a wonderful friend. I ask that you help her have compassion, kindness, gentleness, and patience this year. Help her always stand for what is right, and speak life to the children around her. I pray that she will have wonderful memories of time spent with friends this year. Amen.

Day Five – Peace

Dear God,

As Morgan begins this new school year I pray that you will give her a sense of peace and confidence. Help her remember that you are with her when she is feeling anxious. Bring to her memory the things that she can do to calm down or diffuse a disagreement. I pray that there will be an attitude of unity and togetherness in her school and that each student will experience support, encouragement, and care.  Amen

Back to School Prayer Reminder

The reminder that someone is thinking of you and praying for you is encouraging and comforting. I will also be sending Morgan a reminder that I am thinking of her and praying for her. Morgan absolutely loves rocks, and I found the perfect idea on Etsy – a small engraved stone

In fact, I think I may just get two – one for her, and one for me. It will be a special, meaningful reminder and a small keepsake for both of us.

There is a verse in the Bible, Luke 2:52, that states “and Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.”

I think that sums up beautifully what we want for our grandkids as they head off to their first day of pre-school, kindergarten, middle school, high school, or college, and I consider it an honor to be a part of this process by praying for them daily.
