Whether 5 or 500 miles apart, this app will bring you closer.

Sitting on the sofa, water bottles in hand, and blankets on our laps reading a favorite storybook is one of the most treasured times between grandparent and grandchild.  Can you believe this can happen even when you are living hours apart?

About a month ago I discovered an app called Caribu that allows us to do just that, and a new version of an old tradition was born!

What is Caribu?

Caribu is a subscription video calling app that allows you to access hundreds of books (designed for kids through age 7) from brand name publishers as well as participate in simple games and drawing activities with your grandkids even though you may live miles away from each other.

How Much Does it Cost?

The cost of the app per month is roughly the same as a couple of coffees at my favorite coffee shop, and there are several subscription levels to choose from. Click here to see the full list of pricing options!

6 Reasons We Love Caribu

  1. Their recognition of military families. They share that “by subscribing, you are supporting our Blue star family partnership. This partnership gives free Caribu access to military families, helping military children strengthen connections with their parents and grandparents through long-distance reading.” We love that!
  2. Books are cateorized really well
  3. Both my granddaughter and I can take turns ‘turning pages’ making this a much more engaging experience then reading a book over FaceTime.
  4. There is a ‘touch’ feature! If I touch the screen, she can see what I am pointing at, and vice versa, which is great for the early childhood books she enjoys.
  5. It is easy to save books we enjoy to a ‘favorites’ category. The ‘Thomas 123’ book has been on repeat in our homes lately!
  6. It’s a great way to give my daughter a break. She can work on dinner or another task in the same room while we read.

My granddaughter asks her mom frequently if she and ‘Amma’ can read Thomas the Train together – did you catch that? She’s asking to call and read stories. That’s a win!

My oldest granddaughter is just under 3 years old so we haven’t tried any of the drawing or game activities yet. I believe those features will extend the usefulness of the app as she and the other grandkids get older.

Try It For Yourself!
