My mom has shared stories about the early days of each of my siblings and my arrival. She has told of how after my brother’s birth that she and her cousin shared a hospital room for days while the ‘menfolk’ went back to work. She shared about my arrival, and how Dad, who was busy on the farm, just made it to the hospital in time to hear the news.

Dads Make a Difference

She has added that she was astonished that rather than staying in the hospital for days after my birth (she was hoping for a little vacation from my older brothers!) that she would be heading home soon after! Part of the reason for this was of course the difference in health care practices, but it was also during this time (the mid-1960’s) that experts began to encourage dads to do things like join parents groups, be present during the labor and delivery of their child, and to be engaged in their care at home too.

All this leads to early attachment with their babies. Decades later we are encouraging skin to skin contact between dads and babies soon after delivery, and including them in every aspect of parenting! What a difference! And what a difference Dads make in their kid’s lives!

Research demonstrates time and time again how important a Dad’s role is in a child’s life. (Check out this article from Fatherly to learn more about the data-driven research.)Yet even with this information, we don’t always cheer on or encourage our sons or son-in-laws regarding their parenting, as much as we do our daughters and daughter-in-laws.

Let’s Cheer for Dads

In light of that, today we are going to celebrate our sons and son-in-laws, who may not always get a lot of cheering on outside of Father’s Day. It’s also a great day to cheer on our spouses who are important role models in our grandkid’s lives!

Let’s send Dads a Thank You…or Lots of Thank You’s!

We’ve created a resource you can customize and send that reflects all the wonderful ways the guys in our lives love their kids and grandkids. Changing diapers? Reading stories? Working early in order to get home in time to be with the kids? Sending postcards? Taking vacation days to catch a game or recital? Pausing to listen to jokes told time and time again?  Write in all the things you notice, and pop it in the mail. And don’t just do it once! We’ve given you several variations you can use throughout the year to keep the encouragement going! It’s very simple yet very important so download it for free below and get started.
