Independence day has always been a favorite of mine. Growing up in a farming family in Eastern Washington, the 4th of July was often in the middle of corn harvest, which meant it was also often a work day.  However, we always found time, even if only for a couple of hours, to gather together, enjoy some fresh picked sweet corn, and gaze into the night sky bright with fireworks.

While it’s fun to have elaborate plans for holidays, my fond recollection of our celebrations reminds me that even brief moments of celebrating can result in treasured memories. I’ve been looking for some simple, almost last-minute Fourth of July activities that can be used in person or virtually, and have found some fun ideas to share with you!

1. Game – Scavenger Hunt

Print Out this fun freebie (snap a pic and text it to your grown kids, or share via email if you are celebrating virtually) and get your grandkids hunting. Don’t have everything on the list? Just scratch that item off before you start, because remember it’s all about connecting, not perfection!

The scavenger hunt download is free in the printables library!

2. Craft – Fireworks!

This craft is a great way to make your own fireworks! And most families will have the supplies on hand for this fourth of July activity.

What You’ll Need:

What You Do:

  1. Using scissors, make ‘fringe’ around the edge of the cupcake liner or circle
  2. Glue a fringed liner/circle to the dark paper by placing glue in the center (back) of the circles
  3. Continue to glue circles to the page – your creativity is just exploding!
  4. Fluff up the fringe.
  5. Add some detail to the centers of the circles if desired.

Display for all to see!

3. Color Pages

There are some great 4th of July color pages available for free!  Homemade Gifts Made Easy has a great selection. A simple google search always works too. Pick out a few of your favorites and have a coloring celebration with your grandkids.

We hope you have fun trying out these last-minute fourth of July activities and a wonderful day celebrating!
