Even though almost everyone has great cameras on their phones with the ability to take plenty of good ‘portraits’, there is something just so nostalgic and fun about school pictures. Especially opening up the packet of photos, and getting them ready to share with friends and relatives. That’s why we’ve rounded up five creative ideas for displaying the cutest and cheesiest smiles in the world – your grandkids pictures.
1. Make Christmas Ornaments
There are tons of ideas for creating photo ornaments online, some as simple as heading to your local Dollar Store for a small frame.
Insert the picture, add a ribbon hanger, and a few embellishments if you like. You could also display the current year’s photo year round, and then turn the previous year’s picture into an ornament.
Talk about an inexpensive, and treasured keepsake.
Here is another example we found for some DIY inspiration!
This is from Tasha with Kaleidoscope Living and I love the timeless look. She gives really clear directions with pictures on how to make these if you’re looking for a project!
2. Display them in your Family Tree
There are LOTS of family tree decals out there that can be applied to your wall. I like the one from Amazon below because it frames the photos which I think keeps the focus on the pictures instead of the tree.
How fun would it be to add in the current pictures of your grandkids to other family photos?
I have a large empty hallways so I am loving this idea! If you decide to go this route (or any other wall decal) read through all the reviews. They provide super helpful tips for the best results.
3. Display the pictures pennant style.
Hang a length of ribbon, rope, wire, small lights – whatever goes with your decor. Then add on grandkids pictures using small clothespins.
This would be a fun display you could update seasonally by integrating other small prints or items. You could also use an empty frame and run the wire from edge to edge.
This example from Michaels (pictured below) is great inspiration for a DIY project!
4. Use a Metal Grid Panel
These look great, and I will be purchasing one to put in my office. It will hold memos and of course my grandkids pics. The trouble will be deciding which grid to buy. There are lots to choose from including different shapes, and different colors of metal.
I’m currently looking at this one below because I love the modern look!
5. Washi Tape Frames
For a super inexpensive, kid features gallery, purchase a fun roll of washi tape and use it to make frames on your wall in an area your grandkids can access.
Make a few frames that their school photos will fit in, and then add some blank frames where they can add their current artwork. They will love changing out the featured art when they visit!
The tape designs are fantastic and range from solid colors to sports to flowers to fun graphics, outer space and beyond! You’ll find unlimited designs available so you can feature your grandkids pictures among their favorite activities.
Here are a few examples!

I really like the clean look of this one, but it’s still fun because of the colors and patterns in the washi tape!
