Games & Crafts For a ‘Hole’ Lotta Fun
Friday, June 3rd is National Donut Day 2022, and I plan to celebrate in pretty much every way possible. It doesn’t matter how you spell it – donut or doughnut – besides all of the obvious deliciousness of this day, it’s a great time to connect with our grandkids in person or virtually!
We’re going to get right to the point….we’ve got 4 fun ways to celebrate!
Donut Memory Match
First we’ll point you to these cute donut printables. We plan to use these to play memory with Morgan (age 5). I’ve printed them out and will be mailing them to her ahead of time. I’ll number the donuts so that I can easily communicate with her which ones to turn over as we play virtually. You could also print them out and write personal messages on them before popping them in the mail.
Counting the Sprinkles
I know my granddaughter loves to glue things, so we will each be printing out large donuts using this template, and gluing on paper sprinkles. There are two options here: Have fun decorating your donut, or turn it into a game.
For the game, you’ll need a die, and a predetermined number of sprinkles for each player. Take turns rolling the die and then place the corresponding number of sprinkles on your donut. The first person to use all their sprinkles wins.
For the game, you don’t necessarily have to glue them on, which allows you to play again! To really help your grown kids prep this game for the grandkids you could print, cut and mail the sprinkles right to their door.
Donut Word Search
For older kids, you can each print out a Donut Word Search and then race to see who can find the words the fastest. There are lots of word search options available – just google ‘donut word search’ to find one that fits your grandkids abilities.

Have a Donut Party
Host a donut party! Talk with your grown kids before National Donut Day, and ask about having a little donut party. If it’s virtual, they pick up the donuts for their family, and of course you do the same for you. You can even offer to pay them back quickly (or in advance) using your preferred app.
Then set a time to enjoy donuts together. It’s okay if it’s not actually on donut day!
We’ve even got some conversation starters/donut trivia to help get your donut party started!
- What is your favorite type of donut?
- Would you rather have one donut or 4 donut holes?
- What do you like to drink with your donut?
- Do you dunk your donut?
- How many donuts are made in America each year? (More than 10 billion!)
- When (and why) did National Donut Day begin? (In 1938 to honor those in the Salvation Army who served tasty treats to soldiers in World War I.)
- How many donuts would be needed to stretch from Long Beach, CA to Long Island, NY? (more than 55 million!)
We hope you have a ‘hole’ lot of fun!
