Four Ways to Celebrate Halloween With Grandkids Near or Far

Trick or Treat! These words will be uttered by cute costumed kids everywhere on October 31st in exchange for a delicious treat.  I’m anxiously awaiting pictures of my granddaughters. Last year the oldest was an astronaut!

Given all that is going on in the world I decided to research some ways that grandparents can celebrate halloween with their grandkids when you can’t share this day in person. My findings were encouraging, and I want to share four options with you. There’s something for everyone!

1.Virtual Pumpkin Carving

Did you know there are websites you can visit and carve pumpkins virtually?  While I love the experience of ooey gooey pumpkin parts, and roasting pumpking seeds, this is a great alternative without the mess!  You can facetime while you carve your virtual pumpkins or send pictures via texting to show off those carving skills.  Here is one to check out.

After a 15 second ad on the ABCya website, just click the ‘play’ arrow to begin. A pumpkin will drop from the sky and you can begin carving with your cursor.  You can undo your last step, or reset for a new pumpkin. Once you are finished with your creation,  click on the moon in the circle in the lower right hand corner, and watch your pumpkin light up the night! This is my pumpkin below and I could use some practice!

2. Virtual Corn Maze

The Edmonton Corn Maze is celebrating 20 years and has featured some really incredible mazes!

In 2013 they decided to add Google Street view as an option for more people to experience the maze. A local Edmonton photographer stitched together over 600 pictures and uploaded them to Google. They wanted even more people to have the opportunity to experience the adventure.

Just think, in addition to experiencing the maze with grandkids far away, you might just be exploring along with people from all over the world!

So get that virtual phone call going and then head to the corn maze to see who gets lost first! Here’s a sneak peak of the maze you’ll be heading into!

3. Trick or Treat by Mail

While your grandkids may get plenty of treats, there’s probably something just a bit more special when a treat arrives in the mail from their grandparents.

This can be a snack size candy or maybe a small favor or some stickers.  Don’t forget to add in a quick note wishing them tons of fun.

If you have their parents on board, you can send them the candy ahead of time and ask them to hide it somewhere in the house or yard. Once that happens, get together on Facetime and play the old favorite game of “Hot” or “Cold” until they find their treat.

You might even buy yourself a matching treat and enjoy them together!

    4. Send a selfie!

If you are heading out for an evening of fun, or even if you aren’t, have some fun getting dressed up, and don’t forget to send a selfie – they’ll love it!

One thing to consider is celebrate halloween with your grandkids on a day other than the 31st. That’s what I’ll be doing this year!

Many of them will have busy schedules that day, and there may not be an opportunity to get together virtually. It’s important to remember that the goal is to build relationship, and it doesn’t have to be at a certain moment.

So here’s to dressing up, carving pumpkins, getting lost (and found!) and enjoying maybe just a couple extra pieces of candy with the people who really make this Fall day so fun.
