There’s just no love like the love we have for our grandkids, and there’s no time better to celebrate that fact than Valentine’s day! For real, if I had a flower for every thought of them…..that quote is just too accurate! If you have craft-loving grandkids then this valentine craft kits post is just the read you need to get the creativity flowing.
Depending on the age of your grandchild, if there is a valentine craft kit you think is too difficult, a great solution is to do certain parts yourself and they complete the rest.
For really young grandkids it might be best to even complete the craft on your own and send/give it as a card!
Heart Shaped Lei (Three Variations)
I’ll start off with my favorite. My oldest granddaughter who’s six just loved this!
What you need: cardstock hearts, yarn, straws, clear tape and scissors
You could print, or freehand hearts on the cardstock and then cut them out. (I used 12 hearts.)
Cut your straws into 1 1/2” pieces – you’ll have a straw piece between each heart.
Punch holes in your hearts. Make sure the holes are smaller than your straws, so a small hole punch is best!
Cut your yarn to the length of the lei, and wrap one end in tape.
Then instruct them to lay out a design – heart, straw, heart, straw, and thread on as many as they would like. Tie off to complete.
Heart Variations
- I wrote specific things about her, or things that she loves, on each heart. For example, sweet, freckles, dark hair, caterpillars, purple, and so on.
The heart lei paired perfectly with her princess dresses for months!
2. You could also cut out hearts, decorate them and punch holes around the outside. Cut a length of yarn, or leftover Christmas ribbon, tie a knot in one end and they can lace it through the holes of the hearts.
3. You could even send a collection and they can hang them up together for some great valentine’s day decor in their bedroom!
Name Bookmark
I love painting, and even more than that I love selecting paint colors. Often one of the paint chip collections ends up as a bookmark in something I’m reading.
To create a valentine themed bookmark, head to your local paint store and select a red, pink, or purple-themed card (or whatever your grandkid’s favorite color is).
I usually let the employee know if I am doing something fun with it and only select a couple.
Then just punch a hole in the top, and cut some yarn they can thread through it.
You could also send some heart stickers, and letter stickers or encourage them to use a marker (with supervision) to write some of the things they love in each square next to the letters of their name.
For grandkids enjoying books that aren’t completed in one sitting, this is one of the most fun valentine craft kits to send or make together!
Valentine Spiders
Do you have grandkids that love bugs? How about bugs that can climb the walls?

Like the heart lei, you could either send this as your card to them, adding a few personal touches, or send it as a kit for them to create on their own.
Either way, you’ll need: construction paper, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, a straw, string, scissors, and tape.
Love Orchard
My husband and I grew up in farming families. My husband’s family is still in the business and grows apples, cherries, and pears.
I love the opportunities we have to get out on the farm as a family!
If you will be celebrating Valentine’s Day together then this is one of the most cherished valentine craft kits you could use.
Even without the emotional tie to a farm that I have, creating your own orchard, forest or park will be a ton of fun!
First, have everyone trace their hand – those handprints become the tree trunks.
Cut hearts out to place on the fingers.
On each heart, you can write family members’ names, or write messages to family members.
It will make for some great wall art that can stay up long past February 14th.
Heart Puzzle
Out of all the options, this is one of the best valentine craft kits to send via snail mail.
You’ll send construction paper with a large pre-drawn heart, and basic decorating supplies like stickers (always ask before glitter!).
Instruct them to write their name on it, and add some decorations.
Then they can cut the heart into pieces and create a valetine puzzle.
The more pieces the more difficult the puzzle will be.
If cutting up their heart to be a puzzle is causing fret, just encourage them to keep it as is and hang it up proudly!
Either way, they’ll have a great time putting their valentine together!
Nana Door Dash
For older grandkids, (or your grown kids!) never ever underestimate the value of a small gift card they can use for a drink at a coffee shop or carryout at their favorite lunch spot.
If you live nearby, pick up their favorite for them, and drop it off at their home along with a handwritten note and your favorite DIY valentine craft kits.

I love your ideas on interacting with long distance grandkids. My only problem is my grandkids (5 & 2) live overseas, so many things just don’t work. The time difference alone is difficult to make connections, along with internet problems. Mail takes 2 weeks to arrive.
