Our Nest Discovery

It’s been a couple of years now since we celebrated Easter with a virtual egg hunt, but the hunts are still going strong in our family and my young grandkids are now very interested in all things eggs! This post is all about our no-supplies-needed spring craft we made using a bird nest template printable.

Do you all remember 2020? Yes – the year when virtual everything became the only way to do anything.

That, of course, was the inspiration for the virtual egg hunt.

You can read about it and download your own eggs to hunt right here. After all, egg hunting doesn’t have to be just for Easter. And virtual connections aren’t just for pandemics!

Imagine the excitement when in the midst of all of the egg hunts we found a killdeer nest in our driveway!

With all the interest in egg hunting, we couldn’t wait to share our find!

We sent a picture of the eggs to our oldest granddaughter (age 3 at the time!). We knew if we were lucky, that a few weeks later we might be able to send a video of some very tiny, very quick little babies scurrying around and we did!

I decided to capitalize on this increased interest in eggs and look for a craft to keep the conversation going.

Because many of you may also be egg hunting this time of year, we want to share it with you too!

The Nest Craft

Inspired by the nest discovery, I prepped a little ‘make your own nest’ craft to do over zoom. This is a great preschool activity!

During our ‘zoom meeting’, we had so much fun looking at the pictures I took of the nest and then creating our own.

I had pre-cut the pieces to this craft so all that was needed was glue.

We had fun talking about all the different places birds build nests and just learning some fun bird facts. You can download the bird nest template printable below for free.

Tips From Our Experience Using the Bird Nest Template Printable

To wrap up this post, we’ll share one little baby killdeer fact. They hatch out of their eggs with their soft downy coating, open their eyes, and are capable of walking around – right away!

I’m sure thankful our grandkids don’t grow up that fast, even though there are days it feels like it!

So we want to encourage you to be mindful of your grandkids’ interests and look for ways to connect with each other around it.

It could be a craft, a story, some pictures, or a song – it can be amazing the memories a simple interaction can create!
