Kids already love games, turn those everyday games into Christmas games and it’s even better!
We’ve got a few ideas for in-person and virtual games that you can keep up your Santa sleeves in the coming weeks. These games can be played for just a few minutes, or put on repeat again and again.
If you are in person:
What’s In This Stocking?
Get out a Christmas stocking and fill it with random items. Then without looking allow your grandchild to place one hand in and identify as many items as possible. Set a timer to make it a little more challenging. Repeat with new items. For a little extra fun, you could place a favorite treat or small toy for them to play with after the guessing game is finished.
Pin the Nose on the Snowman
This party game is always good for fun and laughs! Make a basic snowman on craft paper and cut it out. Your grandkids could draw or paste on the snowman’s eyes and mouth. Cut multiple carrot noses out of orange paper. Then one at a take turns being blindfolded and do your best to put that nose on the snowman’s face.
Hershey Kisses Memory Game
This game is sure sweet! Purchase Avery 41568 stickers and print out the template provided below. Place sets of stickers on the bottom of Hershey Christmas kisses. Simply select the images that work best for your age of grandkids. You certainly don’t need to use all 80! Then set them up and play ‘Memory Match’.
Just know that your grandkids might want to eat a couple of these game pieces! If you are of the patient type, you could print the template on plain paper, then cut out and tape it to the bottom of the kisses if you don’t want to purchase the labels.
If you are connecting from a distance:
Candy Cane Hide and Seek
Send a candy cane, or other small treat by snail mail so you each have something to hide. Then take turns hiding the item around the house and playing ‘hot/cold’ with each other. My grandkids love playing ‘find it’ games on Facetime.
Santa Says
Yep – just like Simon Says. Extra fun when you are wearing a Santa Hat!
Who Am I? Christmas Character Game
Print out pictures of well-known Christmas Characters/items on the same size pieces of card stock so you have a ‘deck’ of cards. Frosty, Rudolph, an Elf, Santa, Mrs. Clause, the Grinch, a Christmas tree, candy cane, wreath, ornament, Christmas cookies, sleigh, gingerbread house….Then take turns choosing a card without looking, and hold it up so that only the other person/people can see the card. The player holding the card has a certain amount of questions to guess ‘Who Am I?’
When you are playing using Facetime in order to avoid accidentally seeing your card on the screen, swipe up from the bottom of your screen. This will make it so that the only person you see is the person you are playing instead of both that person and yourself! It will be a little smaller but this will keep you from seeing your card (and your grandkid from seeing theirs)!
Tell a Tale
Collect an assortment of everyday and Christmas items/pictures and use them to create a Christmas Story. Simply hold up an item and begin the story. Then hold up the next item and someone else adds on to the story. The game continues until the pictures of the items have all been used. Kids love creating some fun and sometimes outlandish tales!
