I love the thought of purchasing a special notebook where my writing and memories can have a home. I love the thought of sitting down in a special spot with something delightful to drink, and lighting a candle to set the mood. But most of all I love the thought of leaving a legacy for generations yet to come.
I’m Not Getting It Done
But it’s not happening.
Possibly because the perfect moment to create that environment rarely exists in my day!
But here’s the truth…no one (including me!) would care about what type of paper was used, if I had a candle burning, or any of those other things that create the perfect setting.
It is having my thoughts and memories actually written down that creates the win!
My son, who is 27, has mastered the art of writing down his daily events and thoughts. He has nice leather journals, sports journals, and even a pink llama notebook that I think once belonged to his sister.
And the writing in the llama notebook will be just as treasured as the content in the leather journal. The legacy is not the physical book, but it is the words that are written inside.
He encourages me often to begin this practice. To just start. Because remember, I want to be leaving a legacy. And this is definitely part of the process!
Leaving a Legacy Can Be Daunting, but just start.
The thought of writing down decades of memories is incredibly daunting.
However, focusing on a couple of things each month is quite doable!
My thought is that perhaps I am not alone in the desire to begin this process?
I want to invite you to join me in my new habit of journaling!
Each month use a few writing prompts and questions to get your memories and your pen (or keyboard) flowing.
So grab a notebook, journal, or power up your keyboard! Because it’s time to begin!
2023 Update! I have now been journaling for just over a year and have nearly 40 prompts/questions answered!
Want to get started? Once a month we send out a few legacy prompts to just over 2500 grandparents on our email list.
It has held me accountable too and I am actually getting it done!
You can join us by signing up right here.

Let’s Begin – Two Prompts to Get You Started
What special interests did you have as a child?
What story is often told about you during your early years? Include as many as you wish!
Hands down the story told about me by my older brothers would be the time I absolutely and repeatedly refused to pick up my blocks when Dad told me to.
My brothers are 11 and 13 years older than me, and they were astonished at the boldness in that little two year old body.
Time and time again, I stood my ground as only a two year old can do. But Dad did not give up either, and eventually I followed through with what was asked of me!
It must have been quite the show. Thank goodness that trait has transformed into a steadfastness that is viewed as a positive trait these days!
Using the Journal Prompts to Leave a Legacy in Other Ways
I do believe that these writings will:
- Provide conversation starters to use with my grandkids, and grown kids!
- Give me perspective and provide lots of opportunities for me to recognize the love and grace and support I’ve received.
- Most of all, it will be a wonderful part of leaving a legacy for the generations yet to come.
I am looking forward to this journey! We also look forward to hearing from you! I would love to read some of your stories, and to begin a collection of prompts from you all that we can be included in the future month’s prompts.
Happy journaling!
