2 Tips for Adding Consistent Rest in Your Life
In addition to providing resources for building relationships with your grandkids and grown kids, we also want to encourage you to be your best self! I saw a t-shirt the other day that said ‘If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy and if Grandma ain’t happy RUN”. Oh my! I do not want in any way to cause someone in my family to think they should purchase that shirt!
I think the truth here could be if grandma is exhausted, we aren’t able to fully enjoy our very special place in the family. So today, we’re going to talk a bit about the importance of rest. We are about to go on a weeklong vacation, so I think rest is especially on my mind. But the truth is, whether we are heading out on vacation or not, we need to figure out how to build rest into our lives. Rest brings healing to our bodies and our souls, and allows us to have better relationships with the people around us! Resting helps us be more productive the rest of the day (or week). It brings balance to our lives and allows us to have a reserve to draw from during those times of crisis when resting really isn’t an option.
One thing that I hear often, and that I’ve been called out on, is that I tell people I’m going to ‘try’ and get some rest. But without a bit of preparation, it often doesn’t happen! It’s so easy to just keep going. In fact, in many ways, it’s easier. Because we haven’t prepared or delegated, it’s just easier to keep going and keep doing everything ourselves.
We want to share 2 tips with you to encourage you to be consistent (there’s that word again!) in finding times of rest.
Think about the ways you like to rest.
I enjoy:
- a good book
- a refreshing summer drink outside
- attending a local baseball game (While I want our local team to win, I am not super invested and I can just sit back, enjoy the weather, a snack from the concession stand, and the walk-up songs of each batter. Here’s what is best….I can’t do dishes, work on my laptop, clean the house, or pull the weeds. It’s a few hours of guaranteed rest!)
- Confession time – If I only have a few minutes, one of my favorite places to rest is in the car wash! Believe it or not, the solitude and sound of the water (plus a clean car!) are so refreshing!
Equip Yourself
So let’s prep for rest times! For me, this means checking out a book from the local library ahead of time – or cueing up something on Audible. Having a prepped meal in the freezer that can be cooked in the slow cooker or instant pot. It means adding that Icy coconut lemonade drink to my grocery list, and purchasing the game tickets ahead of time so I won’t have any excuses. It means taking the ‘car wash’ route home when I leave the office. It means writing ‘busy’ on that empty calendar square and knowing that to us it means we are busy resting.
We want to encourage you to take a moment (schedule it if you need to!) and think about how you can find rest. We believe both you, and your family will reap the benefits!
