Connecting With Young Grandchildren

We want to thank one of our subscribers for sharing this adorable weather activity for preschoolers! Today we’re introducing some super cute weather tools to enjoy as you are connecting with young grandchildren. This is an especially fun way to communicate with your grandkids in the 3-5 age range who aren’t reading quite yet.

Preschoolers love ‘checking the weather’ as part of their school days.

Amanda (my daughter) could not wait until it was her day to be the meteorologist at her preschool. She was always so excited to place the appropriate little weather picture on the board.

Our family uses this idea daily during Spring months. We live in the Pacific Northwest where there is a lot of variation in the weather most days.

We can go from warm to cool, cloudy and windy, and then throw in a little rain and occasional hail….all within a short time period.  My granddaughter’s weather will still include occasional snow!

How to Play the Weather Activity for Preschoolers

You can simply take a picture of your weather icon for the day and text it for your grandchild to see. You could also lay out the weather icons over the course of a few days to see how the weather is changing.

Your grandkids are welcome to reply with a picture of what the weather is like where they live.

They will have fun physically selecting their weather icon and sharing it with you too! We know there are weather emojis that could be used,  but sometimes all the choices visible to little ones on our phones can be just too overwhelming!

With that in mind, we’ve created some weather icons you can download and share with your grandkids. You could print a set for each of you, then mail a set to your grandkids with an invitation to a ‘The Weather Club”.

Using the Weather Activity for Preschoolers to Create Consistency

This is a really fun and easy way to build consistency into your relationship as you are connecting with young grandchildren!

If you have grandkids in multiple locations, you could start a group chat. What a fun way to help your grandkids connect a bit too!

To learn more about how consistency, mindfulness, and spontaneity are the key principles to building a great relationship with your grandkids, check out the Roadmap to Long Distance Grandparenting post.

I’m off to check my forecast.  It looks like tomorrow I will need the sun, clouds, wind, and rain pictures!

It might not be the best weather to be out and about in, but any day bridging the distance with my grandaughters brings a whole lot of sunshine into my heart!
